NYS Penal Law SECTION 265.45(3):

"For purposes of this section "safe storage depository" shall mean a safe or other secure container which, when locked, is incapable of being opened without the key, keypad, combination or other unlocking mechanism and is capable of preventing an unauthorized person from obtaining access to and possession of the weapon contained therein and shall be fire, impact, and tamper resistant"

FYI:

While NYS Penal Law allows for vehicle storage ("No person shall store or otherwise leave a rifle, shotgun, or firearm out of such person's immediate possession or control inside a vehicle without first removing the ammunition from and securely locking such rifle, shotgun, or firearm in an appropriate safe storage depository out of sight from outside of the vehicle"), NYC does not ("The licensee shall not leave handgun(s) in an auto")

FYI:

New Jersey Law requires that the safe be "fastened"

"A holder of a valid and lawfully issued permit to carry a handgun shall not leave a handgun outside of their immediate possession or control within a parked vehicle, unless the handgun is unloaded and contained in a closed and securely fastened case , or gunbox, and is not visible from outside of the vehicle, or is locked unloaded in the trunk or storage area of the vehicle."
